I know, I know, okay? Budget gardening? Come on Emily… But seriously, your garden is allowed to be big and beautiful and useful!
As growing our own food has become a major trend again, I thought I would share how I have been doing it for barely nothing.
Harvesting seeds from fruit and vegetables you have already purchased is a great start! Dry them out in a folded piece of paper towel and start them off in small seed pots when you are ready. I have collected all kinds of plants; lemons, limes, oranges, avocados, tomatoes, jalapeños, blackberries, apples… you name it with a seed I have probably harvested it and I’m waiting to plant it.
These types of big plans come to me in spurts and sometimes research into them is missed. Like starting an Avocado from seed… yes it will start growing roots and it will start forming a tree type of plants but be prepared it will take 7 years for a haverstable avocado. Olives?! They take even lonnnggger! But does that stop me from starting the seeds? Nope. In 7-15 years my gardens will be producing enough for me to possibly not have to buy produce for several months out of the year- and I’m really looking forward to it. Some plants take no time at all. Take tomatoes or pepper plants. Give them a good season and BOOM you have tomatoes and peppers ready for harvest.
Living. Loving. Gardening.
